Quintessential gives you a theme and a jumble of letters that make up five words on it. Move letters between the rows to rebuild all five words, using the theme as your guide, and try to finish in as few moves as you can.

About Quintessential

Quintessential is a free daily word puzzle in the browser. Each numbered puzzle shows a 5x5 grid of letters and a one-word theme (BAMBOO on 2 October 2026, for example). The 25 letters are the five five-letter words of the answer, jumbled across the rows, and your job is to put every word back in its own row with as few moves as possible. Puzzle #1698 fell on 2 October 2026, so the numbering goes back to early 2022.

A move is a swap: you click, tap or drag one letter onto another and they change places. After every swap the tiles are recoloured. Green means the letter is in the right spot, yellow means it belongs in that row's word but in another position, and gray means it belongs in a different row altogether. The theme hints at what the five words have in common, which helps when the colours alone leave several options.

Every daily puzzle can be solved in eight swaps, and your finish is rated by move count, with eight swaps rated Perfect and a word of praise for anything up to twelve. The game also keeps a timer and statistics, and once the daily is done a Random Game button serves extra puzzles that do not count toward your stats.

It suits players who like Waffle and other letter-swap puzzles, and anyone who prefers deduction over vocabulary recall: you always have every letter you need, so the challenge is working out where each one goes without wasting moves.

How to play Quintessential

  1. Open quintessential.fun; the day's numbered puzzle and its theme are shown above the grid.
  2. Click or drag one letter onto another to swap the two.
  3. Read the colours: green is placed correctly, yellow belongs in that row elsewhere, gray belongs in another row.
  4. Keep swapping until all five rows spell words on the theme.
  5. Check your move count and rating; eight moves is a perfect solve.

Tips

  • Before moving anything, use the theme and the green tiles to guess at least one whole word.
  • Look for swaps that fix two tiles at once: a perfect solve needs every move to put both letters in their final place.
  • Gray letters must leave their row, so pair a gray tile with a gray tile in the row where it belongs.
