By A Vowel
Five jumbled words, each missing a different vowel.
Every day: One numbered puzzle a day, the same for everyone: five themed words, jumbled and each missing one vowel; add A, E, I, O and U once each to unjumble them all, timed and ranked on a daily leaderboard. New puzzle: Once a day; each puzzle is numbered and dated, and the site does not state the time.

By A Vowel is a daily word jumble from Lex.Games. You get five scrambled words on a hidden theme, and each is missing one vowel: one an A, one an E, one an I, one an O and one a U. Add each vowel once and unscramble all five as fast as you can; correct words lock in green.
About By A Vowel
By A Vowel is a daily word jumble that Lex Friedman makes for Lex.Games. Each numbered puzzle shows five jumbles, for example NSLCUE, LNMTEE, IQUDL, OMST and ENYXG on 2 October 2026. Every jumble is a real word with one vowel taken out. One is missing an A, one an E, one an I, one an O and one a U, and you must add each of the five vowels exactly once. A word may contain other vowels; only one is missing.
The five answers always share a theme, which can be obvious or subtle, and spotting it helps with the harder jumbles. As you type, colours tell you where you stand: green means a correct answer, locked in place; blue means a real word that could fit but is not part of the solution; red means not a word; and a red border means you have used a vowel already taken by a locked answer.
A timer runs while you play, solved puzzles go on that day's leaderboard, and a give up button shows the words if you are stuck. Older puzzles are in the archive.
By A Vowel is free on the web and in the Lex.Games app for iPhone and iPad, where it sits beside Conlextions, Lexicogs, Square Dance and the other Lex.Games dailies; an optional upgrade unlocks the PRO games. It suits players who like anagrams and a short themed puzzle with one extra twist.
How to play By A Vowel
- Open lex.games/byavowel and look at the five jumbled words and the vowels A, E, I, O and U above them.
- Pick a jumble, choose which vowel it is missing, and type the unjumbled word.
- Green locks the answer in; blue means a valid word that is not the intended one, red means not a word.
- Use each vowel once across the five words, and use the theme to check your answers.
- Solve all five and share your time, or press give up to see the answers.
Tips
- Start with the shortest jumble; a four letter word plus one vowel has few options.
- Unusual letters like Q, X and Y narrow things fast: Q nearly always wants a U.
- Once two answers lock in, guess the theme; it often gives away the rest.
- A blue word is a hint that you have the right vowel but the wrong word, or the right word for a different vowel.
Questions
Can a word have more than one vowel?
Yes. Each word is missing only one vowel, but it may contain others already.
What do the colours mean?
Green is a correct, locked answer. Blue is a real word that is not part of the solution. Red is not a valid word. A red border means that vowel is already used by a locked answer.
Is By A Vowel free?
Yes, on the web and in the Lex.Games iPhone and iPad app. An optional upgrade unlocks the PRO games.
Is there a theme?
Always. The five answers share a theme, which can be subtle.
