Blossom Word Game is a free, open-source word hunt in the Spelling Bee format, built on the open-source Spelling Bee project and using the 12dicts word list. It is a separate fan site, not the Merriam-Webster game of a similar name.

Each day there is one numbered hive: six letters around a yellow centre letter. Words must be at least four letters long and include the centre letter, and letters can be reused. Four-letter words score one point, longer words one point per letter, and a pangram that uses all seven letters earns its length plus 7. Ranks run from Beginner to Genius based on the share of possible points.

What sets it apart is the Today's Challenge panel beside the hive: a small garden with up to five flowers for four-letter words, four for five-letter words, three for six-letter words, two for seven-letter words and a rainbow flower for the pangram. Each puzzle also gives three hints, each filling in the first three letters of a word you have not found.

The archive lets you replay past days, and a solver reveals every answer if you give up. Progress is saved in your browser, with no sign-up. It suits Spelling Bee players who want a free alternative, and English learners who appreciate the hints.

2. Type or tap words of four or more letters that use the centre letter. Letters can repeat.
3. Press Enter to submit; valid words score and may bloom a flower in Today's Challenge.
4. Keep going to reach Genius and bloom every flower, then share your result.

Tips

• Find the pangram first: it is worth its length plus 7 points and blooms the rainbow flower.
• Try common endings such as -ing, -ed and -s on words you already have.
• Save the three hints for when you are stuck; each gives the first three letters of a missing word.
