Word Wheel is the Irish Independent's daily word-building puzzle, played free in the browser on independent.ie. Seven letters sit in a honeycomb with one required letter in the middle; you score points for every word of four or more letters and climb nine ranks towards Genius before midnight.
About Word Wheel (Irish Independent)
Word Wheel is a daily word puzzle from the Irish Independent, on the puzzles section of independent.ie. The board is a cluster of seven hexagons with one highlighted letter in the centre, and the question is how many words you can make from them. Words must have at least four letters and must use the centre letter, and letters can be used more than once.
Every accepted word scores. A four-letter word earns 1 point and longer words earn 1 point per letter; a panagram, a word that uses all seven letters, earns 7 bonus points, and every puzzle has at least one. The word list leaves out curses and obscure words. As your score grows you move up nine ranks from Beginner to Genius, each set as a share of the points available that day.
A new wheel appears at midnight, the same for everyone. A list under the rank bar keeps the words you have found, a button shuffles the outer letters, and the Yesterday's Answers page shows the previous wheel's full list with its panagrams highlighted. The statistics page tracks your rank for each day of this week and last week, words found, games played, panagrams found and your most frequent rank, with a Share button.
How to play Word Wheel (Irish Independent)
- Open Word Wheel on independent.ie and press Play.
- Tap letters on the wheel or type them to spell a word of at least four letters that includes the highlighted centre letter.
- Press Enter to submit; letters may be used more than once, and Delete removes the last letter.
- Keep going to collect points and climb the ranks, and look for the panagram that uses all seven letters for 7 extra points.
- Come back after midnight for a new wheel, and check Yesterday's Answers for the words you missed.
Tips
- Press the shuffle button to rearrange the outer letters when you run out of ideas.
- Try common endings such as -ED, -ER or -ING if those letters are on the wheel, since longer words score more.
- Letters can repeat, so words with a doubled letter, such as BOOR from B, O and R, count too.
- Yesterday's Answers shows the full list, which is a good way to learn the kind of words the list accepts.
