No Spell Check on iPhone: a definition, Looking or sounding sad and dismal, above a half-typed spelling and an on-screen keyboard

No Spell Check is a daily spelling test for one. Each day brings a new set of hard words, the same for everyone; you hear each one spoken, see its definition, and type the spelling, with three tries per word. Fast, correct answers score more, and perfect days build a streak.

About No Spell Check

No Spell Check takes the spelling bee out of the school hall. Each day everyone gets the same short set of hard words. For each one you tap to hear it spoken, read a one-line definition for context, and type how you think it is spelled. There is no autocorrect and no red underline to warn you, only your ear and your memory.

You have three tries per word, and the answer is revealed if it beats you. Your score rewards accuracy first, with bonus points for answering quickly, and harder words carry a 1.5 times multiplier. Get every word of the day right and your streak grows; miss a day and it goes back to zero. A daily leaderboard ranks the day's scores, and an archive holds earlier sets.

Beyond the daily set there are challenge ladders, where you play friends or strangers head to head on the same words with a rating at stake. Signing in with an email address or Google keeps your streak across devices; you can play without an account, but your streak then stays on that device.

No Spell Check runs in the browser and as a free iPhone app, made by Suhaim Abdussamad. It suits anyone who likes words such as pernicious and lugubrious and wants a quick, honest check on their spelling.

Tips

  • Listen more than once before typing; replaying costs nothing but a few seconds.
  • Use the definition to place the word's origin: Latin and Greek roots often give away the spelling of a vowel sound.
  • Speed earns bonus points, but a wrong first try costs more than a slow correct one.
  • On iPhone, turn off silent mode or you will not hear the word.
