Spellcheck after a finished round: Level One: Easy with five green ticks, a Go to next round button, a typing box and an on-screen keyboard

Spellcheck is a daily spelling bee for one. Press play to hear a word with some information about it, type how you think it is spelled, and submit. The rounds start easy and get harder, and new words arrive every day at midnight Eastern Time.

About Spellcheck

Spellcheck is a daily spelling game made by Answer in Progress, the YouTube channel whose creator built it after setting out to learn how spelling bees work. Each round is a row of words, shown as play buttons. Press one and the game reads the word aloud with some information about it, looping the audio so you can start typing at any time.

You can take the words in any order, using the on-screen keyboard or your own, and each correct word turns into a green tick. A round allows only one submission, so check your spelling before pressing submit. Rows rise in difficulty from Level One: Easy upward, and finishing a row leads to the next round.

New words come out every day at midnight Eastern Time, the same for everyone. The game is free, works on phones and had no ads when it launched in early 2024. TED later published its own daily spelling challenge in collaboration with Spellcheck.

How to play Spellcheck

  1. Open spellcheck.xyz and start the day's first round.
  2. Press a play button to hear a word and some information about it.
  3. Type the word as you think it is spelled; the audio keeps looping while you type.
  4. Do the words in any order, then submit the round once.
  5. Move on to the next, harder round.

Tips

  • Listen for the extra information: a definition or origin can settle a tricky spelling.
  • Type slowly and check double letters before you submit, since each round has one submission.
  • Think of related words: the root often shows the spelling of an unstressed vowel.
  • Use headphones; the computer voice can be hard to follow on some words.
