Meldle

Meldle #279, rated Hard: twelve fragments such as FLE, OLD, RACK, MIC and CAMP in a four by three grid with four lives

Meldle gives you twelve short letter fragments a day and hides three two-letter pairs among them. Each pair, slotted in at the start, middle or end, completes four everyday words, so you sort the fragments into three groups of four and name each pair. You have four lives.

About Meldle

Meldle is a word puzzle about missing pieces. The board shows twelve fragments such as AIR, SPEE, RACK or CAMP, none of them the finished word. Hidden behind them are three melds, two-letter pairs that each finish four of the fragments. Drop CH into AIR and you get CHAIR; drop the same CH onto SPEE and you get SPEECH.

You tap the four fragments you think share a meld, type the two letters and lock it in. The twist that makes it harder than it looks is that the pair can go anywhere in the word: at the front, in the middle or at the end, so a fragment can suggest several melds at once.

A puzzle is solved when all three groups are found. You have four lives for wrong groups, and a hint is there if you are stuck. Each board is numbered and labelled by difficulty, and you can share your result or challenge a friend.

A new Meldle unlocks at midnight UTC, and past puzzles can be replayed in the archive. It is free in the browser.

Tips

  • Try each common pair (CH, TH, ER, ST, IN) at the start, middle and end of a fragment before ruling it out.
  • Start with the fragments that can only take one pair: they anchor a group.
  • Short fragments are flexible, so place them last.
