Graceful

Number the circles so that no two lines share the same difference.

Every day: One numbered puzzle a day, the same for everybody: number the circles of a tree so every line's difference is different. It starts easy on Monday and builds to Sunday's largest board. New puzzle: Once a day (the listing does not state the time).

Graceful #240 in progress: a tree of numbered circles with each line showing the difference between its ends, three circles still empty

Graceful is a daily maths puzzle for iPhone. Each day everyone gets the same tree of circles and lines; you give every circle a different number, each line takes the difference between its two ends, and you win when no two lines share a value. The week builds from an easy Monday to Sunday's biggest board.

About Graceful

Graceful takes its puzzle from graph theory. The board is a tree: circles joined by lines, with no loops. You give each circle its own number, from 0 up to the number of lines, using no number twice. Every line then takes the difference between the two circles it joins, so a line between 7 and 2 is worth 5. You win when no two lines share a value, which means that with ten lines the values come out as exactly 1 to 10, each once. Lines that clash glow in the same colour, and you can undo as much as you like.

The idea is called graceful labelling. Every tree anyone has checked can be numbered this way, and mathematicians believe they all can, but the graceful tree conjecture has been open since the 1960s. Each daily is a small case of it.

There is one puzzle a day, numbered (Graceful #240, for example), the same for everybody. Monday opens easy and the week builds to Sunday's largest board, around twenty lines or more. Solving keeps a streak, and the result can be shared as a grid of blocks showing the shape of your solve without any numbers. The last seven days are always free to play; a single purchase, not a subscription, unlocks the full archive, and today's puzzle never needs it.

Graceful is made by Tim Davis and came out on the App Store in August 2026. It has no accounts, no ads and no timers pushing you, and works with no signal. It suits players who like number logic and a little real mathematics.

How to play Graceful

  1. Open today's numbered Graceful puzzle.
  2. Give each circle a number from 0 up to the number of lines, never repeating a number.
  3. Watch each line show the difference between its two circles; clashing lines glow in the same colour.
  4. Rearrange numbers until every line has a different value.
  5. Share your result and come back the next day; the boards grow through the week.

Tips

  • Place the largest and smallest numbers first: the line worth the most must join 0 and the top number.
  • The next largest value can only come from a few pairs, so place it right after.
  • Leaves, circles with a single line, are easiest to adjust; leave them for last.
  • Use undo freely; swapping two numbers is often quicker than starting a branch again.

Questions

Is the Graceful puzzle the same for everyone?

Yes. One puzzle a day, the same one for everybody.

Is Graceful free?

Yes. The daily and the last seven days are free with no ads. A single purchase unlocks the older archive.

How hard is it?

Monday starts easy and the week builds to Sunday's largest board.

Does every board have a solution?

Every tree anyone has checked can be numbered gracefully, though no one has proved that all can.
