Wordwonk is a free browser word game that changes its rules every day. Each numbered puzzle has a name, a short worked example and one board to solve, from building compound words in a 3x3 grid to turning one word into another a tile at a time. Past days stay playable in the archive.
About Wordwonk
Wordwonk comes from wonkle.org, a small site of browser games. Its first puzzle went up on 15 October 2026, and each day since has brought a numbered puzzle with a name and a mechanic of its own. The archive describes it as a new word game every day, with rules nobody has played before.
Every puzzle opens with a How it works box that solves a smaller version step by step, so you learn the day's rules before you play. Loose Threads (No. 1) asked you to pull one letter from each word so a real word is left, with the pulled letters spelling a hidden word. Switchback (No. 2) had you flip one tile at a time to turn a start word into a goal word, making a real word at every flip. Compound Interest (No. 3) gives you nine words to place in a 3x3 grid so that every pair of neighbours, across and down, joins into a compound word.
You get a limited number of checks and hints on each puzzle, and a Reveal answer button if you are stuck. The game keeps your results in the browser, counts a streak of days solved on the day, and lets you copy a result to share. Nothing needs an account.
It suits players who like word puzzles but tire of the same rules each morning: every day is a small new game to work out, and most take a few minutes.
How to play Wordwonk
- Open wonkle.org/wordwonk to get today's numbered puzzle.
- Read the How it works box, which solves a small example of the day's rules.
- Play the day's board: in Compound Interest, tap a word and then a square, and tap two squares to swap them.
- Press Check to see which parts are right; you have a few checks and hints, and Reveal answer if you give up.
- Copy your result to share it, and open the archive to play earlier days.
Tips
- Read the worked example closely: it often shows the trick the full puzzle depends on, such as which corner has to start or end two words.
- Save your checks until the board is nearly done, since each one is limited.
- In a compound grid, start with the words that only work at the start or only at the end of a compound.
