SPELT
Fill the gaps in five words so that every tile in the pool gets used.
Every day: A new numbered five-row board each day, the same for everyone, with blanks to fill from a shared pool of letter tiles. Difficulty rises through the week. New puzzle: Once a day (local midnight).

SPELT is a free daily word-logic puzzle. Five rows of letters each have a gap or two, and a small pool of tiles has to fill them all: several words fit each row, but only one combination spends every tile.
About SPELT
SPELT is a browser word puzzle by Derek Peterson that went live in April 2026. Each day brings one numbered board of five rows, five letters wide, with a few empty cells scattered through it and a pool of loose letter tiles underneath. Everyone gets the same board, and puzzles run from easiest on Monday to hardest on Saturday.
The twist is that most rows could become more than one word. A row reading S, P, E, L and a blank might be SPELL or SPELT, and on its own there is no way to tell. The answer comes from the pool: you must place every tile, so a choice in one row decides what is left for the others. Solving it is less about vocabulary and more about working out which words force which.
You drag or tap tiles into blanks, and a row is marked when it spells a word. When the pool is empty and all five rows are words, the board is solved and your time is recorded. Up to three hints are available if you stall, and a share card sums up how you got there.
The site keeps an archive of every past board, a practice pool for extra puzzles, and simple statistics, and it keeps working offline once loaded. It suits players who like deduction more than guessing, and anyone who enjoys the moment when one letter settles the whole grid.
How to play SPELT
- Look at the five rows and note which blanks could take more than one letter.
- Find a row where only one word fits and place that tile from the pool.
- Use what is left in the pool to narrow down the other rows.
- Keep going until every tile is placed and all five rows are words.
- Use a hint if you get stuck, then share your result.
Tips
- Start with the row that has only one possible word: it removes a tile and unlocks others.
- Count the letters in the pool: a letter that appears twice must go in two places.
- Early in the week is a good place to learn the logic before the Saturday boards.
