BackWord daily puzzle with coloured Wordle rows and some letters filled in above the answer row

UnWordle hands you a finished Wordle grid with the answer on the bottom row and the colours of every guess above it, but no letters. Your job is to fill in real words that would have produced exactly those colours. There is one daily puzzle, plus an unlimited mode and a builder for your own grids.

About UnWordle

UnWordle turns the familiar five-letter guessing game around. Instead of finding a hidden word, you start with it: the answer sits in the last row, and the rows above show only the green, yellow and grey pattern each earlier guess produced.

To solve the grid you type words into the empty rows. Each one has to be a valid word whose letters give exactly the colours shown when compared with the answer: green tiles must match the answer's letter in that spot, yellow tiles must use a letter from the answer in a different place, and grey tiles must use letters not in the answer. Some puzzles leave only a few tiles to fill, others whole rows.

There is a new daily puzzle each day for everyone, alongside an unlimited mode and a builder for making grids to share. The same idea is available as the free BackWord app on iPhone and Android, which numbers its daily puzzles.

It suits Wordle players who enjoy the deduction more than the guessing, and it plays more like a small logic puzzle than a word hunt.

How to play UnWordle

  1. Open the daily UnWordle and look at the answer in the bottom row.
  2. Study the colour pattern in each empty row above it.
  3. Type a real word that gives exactly that pattern against the answer.
  4. Check that greys use letters not in the answer and yellows use answer letters in other spots.
  5. Fill every row to finish the grid.

Tips

  • Start with rows that have the most green tiles; they leave only a few letters to choose.
  • Use common, vowel-heavy words for rows that are mostly grey or yellow.
  • Remember a yellow letter can never sit in the spot where it would turn green.
