SPAN is a free daily word game played like Wordle, except the length of the answer is hidden. You get seven guesses of 4 to 9 letters, with the usual colour feedback, and a gold dot appears only when a guess is exactly one letter off the right length. There is one numbered puzzle a day plus an unlimited practice mode.

About SPAN

SPAN is a browser word game that takes Wordle's colour feedback and removes one piece of information: how long the answer is. The secret word can have anywhere from four to nine letters, and each guess can be any length in that range.

The game started with SPAN #1 on 1 August 2026 and gives every player the same numbered word each day. It is free, carries no adverts and needs no account; the only extra is a Practice mode for unlimited rounds.

A round gives you seven guesses. Letters in the right place turn green, letters in the word but elsewhere turn gold, and a small gold dot appears after a guess only when that guess is exactly one letter too long or too short. No dot means you have the length right or are two or more letters away, so part of the puzzle is narrowing down the length while you hunt for letters.

It suits Wordle players who want a little more deduction each morning without a longer play time.

How to play SPAN

  1. Open SPAN to load today's numbered puzzle.
  2. Type a word of 4 to 9 letters and press enter.
  3. Read the colours: green for right letter in the right spot, gold for a letter that is in the word elsewhere.
  4. Check for the gold dot after your guess, which means you are exactly one letter off the length.
  5. Use what you learn to solve the word within seven guesses.

Tips

  • Try guesses of different lengths early on: whether the dot appears tells you a lot about the length.
  • Remember that no dot is ambiguous: you may be spot on or two or more letters away.
  • Common letters still matter, so mix length tests with words full of frequent letters.

Questions

How is SPAN different from Wordle?

The rules are the same except the answer's length is hidden and can be 4 to 9 letters. You get seven guesses, and a gold dot shows when a guess is exactly one letter off the length.

Does everyone get the same word?

Yes. The puzzle number is counted from the launch day, 1 August 2026, so everyone sees the same SPAN on the same date.
