Solvent's daily Pipes puzzle: a five by five grid of pipe tiles to rotate so water runs from the tank to Pip's plant, with a par of 31 taps

Solvent is a free browser site with a set of fifteen short daily puzzles, from rotating pipes and a nonogram to a five-letter word game and a hole of mini golf. Everyone gets the same set each day, solving one keeps your streak, and a timed leaderboard ranks the day's fastest solvers.

About Solvent

Solvent is a daily puzzle site that runs in the browser with no download. Each day it puts out a full set of fifteen small puzzles, and every player gets the same ones. Its mascot, a blue square called Pip, turns up through the set: you water Pip's plant in Pipes, slide Pip across the ice in Glide and look for Pip in a busy picture in Where's Pip?.

The set mixes logic, words, memory and a little skill. Pipes asks you to turn tiles until water runs from the tank to the plant with no open ends, against a par of taps. Snapshot is a daily memory test, Mini Golf gives you one hole, Pip's Mystery asks which suspect is lying, Thief is a code to crack and Hivemind asks you to guess how everyone else voted. For word players there are Gridlock, a five-letter word game, plus Riddles, Quartets, a Mini Crossword and a Word Search, and the classic grids are covered by a Sudoku and a Nonogram.

Solving any one puzzle keeps your daily streak going, and you can pin your favourites into a personal daily set. Each solve is timed, and mistakes and hints add seconds to your time (3 seconds, then 5, then 7 and so on) before it goes on the day's leaderboard of the top 100. You can add friends, put them into groups and compare times on a leaderboard for each group, and you earn badges and experience along the way.

The daily puzzles are free and can be played as a guest; a free account keeps your streak and badges across devices. The site shows ads. A paid Solvent Plus membership (4.99 US dollars a month or 32.99 a year) removes them and adds unlimited practice puzzles in every game at easy, medium and hard, plus an archive of the last 14 days.

It suits players who like a varied morning routine of short puzzles rather than one long one, and anyone who wants a quick daily race against friends.

Tips

  • Start with the puzzles you are quickest at if you are chasing the leaderboard: a clean solve with no hints keeps your time free of added seconds.
  • In Pipes, fix the corner and edge tiles first, since they can only point inward, and aim for the par number of taps.
  • Create a free account before a long streak builds up, because a guest streak is kept on that device only.
