A Really Bad Chess board on Puzzmo with mismatched sets of pieces

Puzzmo is a website and iPhone app that publishes a set of new puzzles every day, from its own crossword to word games like SpellTower and Typeshift, the shape puzzle Flipart and Really Bad Chess. The daily puzzles are free to play, and a Puzzmo Plus subscription adds the archive and extra puzzles. Points, streaks and leaderboards tie the games together.

About Puzzmo

Puzzmo was built by game designer Zach Gage and engineer Orta Therox and opened in October 2023, first through a waitlist that handed out a limited number of access keys each day. It works like a newspaper games page rebuilt for the web: one home screen with a fresh set of puzzles each day. Hearst Newspapers, an early investor, bought Puzzmo in December 2023 and kept Gage and Therox running it, and the puzzles also appear on sites run by other publishers.

Several of the games are versions of Gage's earlier mobile titles. SpellTower is a letter grid where you trace words in any direction and the letters you use disappear, so the aim is to clear the board. Typeshift has columns of letters that slide up and down like a combination lock until they spell words across. Really Bad Chess hands you a lopsided but carefully balanced set of pieces against a computer opponent. Next to these sit Cross|word, a crossword with an optional easier hint for every clue, Flipart, where you flip shapes around pivot points until they fit inside a frame, Pile-Up Poker, which builds poker hands in rows and columns, and newer games such as Memoku, Wordbind, Cube Clear and Bongo.

Each game gives you a score or time, and your results feed into points, achievements and leaderboards. You can add friends and play together. The daily puzzles are free; Puzzmo Plus, a paid subscription, opens the back catalogue, extra puzzles and removes ads.

Puzzmo suits people who already have a morning routine of Wordle, Connections and a mini crossword and want a wider spread of games under one login, with a mix of word, logic and card puzzles.

Tips

  • Start with a game you know to warm up, then try one you have not played yet.
  • In SpellTower, plan long words that clear letters near the bottom so the tower does not leave stragglers.
  • In Typeshift, look for letters that appear in only one position; they often fix a column.
  • Use the easier hint in Cross|word before revealing letters, so you still get to solve the answer yourself.
  • Make an account so your streaks and points are kept across devices.
