Shikaku Daily's puzzle for Sunday, October 4, 2026: an empty Medium 8 by 8 grid of number clues with its gold, silver and bronze target times

Shikaku Daily is a free web puzzle from 601 Labs with a new Shikaku every day, the same for all players. You drag rectangles over a grid until every cell is covered and each rectangle holds one number equal to its area, racing gold, silver and bronze times for leaderboard points.

About Shikaku Daily

Shikaku is the Nikoli pencil puzzle in which a grid scattered with numbers is cut into rectangles. Each rectangle has to contain exactly one number, that number is its area, and every cell belongs to one rectangle with no gaps or overlaps. Shikaku Daily serves one computer-checked puzzle with a single solution each day.

The day's puzzle starts on a size picked by that date's seed: Easy at 6 by 6, Medium at 8 by 8 or Hard at 10 by 10, with Medium the most common. Solving it unlocks the other two. Each board shows three target times for gold, silver and bronze trophies, and points are the trophy's value multiplied by the difficulty, plus a bonus for consecutive days played. Leaderboards show today, the last 30 days and all time; only your first solve of each size counts.

There is no login: you choose a nickname, your history stays in the browser, and a six-character recovery code moves it to another device. An archive keeps every earlier day, dated, to replay. It suits players who like quick spatial logic and a stopwatch, and anyone who enjoys The Economist's Inboxes or LinkedIn's Patches.

How to play Shikaku Daily

  1. Open Shikaku Daily, press Play Today's Puzzle and choose a nickname.
  2. Drag from one cell to another to draw a rectangle; it is accepted only if it holds exactly one number equal to its area.
  3. Right-click or long-press a rectangle to remove it, or draw a new one over it to replace it.
  4. Cover every cell to stop the clock and earn a trophy for your time.
  5. Play the other two sizes once they unlock, and come back tomorrow to keep your streak.

Tips

  • Place prime clues first: a 2, 3, 5 or 7 can only be a single row or column of cells.
  • Large numbers near an edge or corner often have only one shape that fits.
  • Note the day's gold time in the header before you start; a clean solve on the first try beats a fast one with corrections.

Questions

When does a new Shikaku Daily puzzle come out?

Every day at midnight in your local time zone. All players get the same puzzle on the same calendar day.

Is Shikaku Daily free?

Yes. There is no account or sign-up; you only pick a nickname for the leaderboard.

Can I play earlier days?

Yes. The archive lists past puzzles by date.

Why is today's puzzle a different size from yesterday's?

The starting size is seeded from the date: Easy (6x6) a quarter of the time, Medium (8x8) half the time and Hard (10x10) a quarter. The other two sizes unlock once you solve the first.
