Sections is a daily number logic puzzle related to Sudoku. Thick bars split the grid into horizontal and vertical sections of different lengths, and each section must hold the numbers from 1 to its length with no repeats. Every cell sits in one horizontal and one vertical section, so each number has to fit both.

About Sections

Sections takes the Sudoku idea of no repeats and moves it from rows and boxes to sections. The grid is divided by thick bars into runs of cells, some across and some down, and every cell belongs to exactly one horizontal and one vertical section.

A section of length 3 can only hold 1, 2 and 3; a section of length 5 holds 1 to 5. Some cells start filled in, and you use the lengths and the crossings to place the rest. There is no arithmetic, only logic. You may make three mistakes before the puzzle is lost, and a timer records your solve.

The daily puzzle changes size from day to day, from 5x5 up to 9x9, so the difficulty varies. An interactive tutorial teaches the rules in about two minutes.

It suits Sudoku players who want a fresh rule set with the same calm deduction.

How to play Sections

  1. Look at the grid and the thick bars that split it into sections.
  2. Note each section's length: it holds the numbers 1 to that length.
  3. Fill cells so the number fits both its horizontal and vertical section.
  4. Avoid repeats in any section; you have three mistakes in hand.
  5. Finish when every cell is filled correctly.

Tips

  • Start with sections of length 1 and 2; they leave almost no choice.
  • A cell where a short and a long section cross can only hold a small number.
  • Use the tutorial once; the crossing rule is the whole game.
