A solved Roosterkoek board dated 2026-06-30: a green 5x5 letter grid with the Afrikaans words PENSE, EIERS and STELE across, 15 swaps left and a four-day streak

Roosterkoek is Afrispeel's Afrikaans take on Waffle. Each day brings one scrambled 5x5 grid of letters, and you swap pairs of letters until three words across and three words down are spelled correctly, with the fewest swaps you can manage.

About Roosterkoek (Afrispeel)

Roosterkoek is one of the daily word games on Afrispeel, a free South African site of games played in Afrikaans. Its name is the Afrikaans grill bread, a nod to Waffle, the English game it follows. The site also offers Bek-Slaner, an Afrikaans Wordle, and AfriMienie, a mini crossword.

The board is a 5x5 grid with four holes, so the letters form three horizontal and three vertical five-letter words that cross each other. Every letter of the solution is there from the start, just in the wrong places. You swap two letters at a time, and the tiles change colour after each move: green when a letter sits where it belongs, yellow when it belongs somewhere else in that row or column, and grey when it is not part of that row or column at all.

You have a fixed budget of swaps, shown above the board, and whatever you have left when the grid is solved becomes your score in stars. Every player gets the same dated puzzle, and the site keeps a streak for consecutive days played. It suits Afrikaans speakers and learners who like Waffle, since spelling counts more than guessing: every word uses Afrikaans spelling, including its diacritics.

How to play Roosterkoek (Afrispeel)

  1. Open Roosterkoek on afrispeel.co.za or in the Afrispeel Android app; sign in if you want your streak and scores kept.
  2. Look at the colours: green letters are already in place, yellow ones belong elsewhere in the same row or column, grey ones belong in neither.
  3. Tap or drag one letter onto another to swap them.
  4. Keep swapping until all six Afrikaans words, three across and three down, turn green.
  5. Finish within the swap budget; the swaps you have left are your score for the day.

Tips

  • Fix the corner letters first: each one belongs to both an across word and a down word, so its colour tells you the most.
  • A yellow letter in a corner or at a crossing could belong to either of its two words, so check both before moving it.
  • Plan a swap that turns two letters green at once; those are what keep swaps in hand for a high score.
