Every day: A set of retro video game puzzles each day, the same for every player: guess a game letter by letter, name one from clues and a zooming box art picture, pick one from a screenshot or partly hidden box art, and rebuild a cover in a tile puzzle. New puzzle: Midnight UTC.

Retro Game Trivia is a daily quiz about video games more than 15 years old. Its main mode mixes Wordle and Hangman: you guess the title one letter at a time and each wrong letter unlocks a clue. Clue, Image and Box Art modes add more ways to name the day's games, and a past games archive keeps older puzzles playable.

About Retro Game Trivia

Retro Game Trivia is a browser game made by a solo developer for fans of older games. The site counts a game as retro once it is more than 15 years old, picks daily answers from release history, often games released on that calendar date, and takes its game data from IGDB.

Letter Reveal is the featured mode: the title appears as blanks and you guess one letter at a time, with a new clue such as the genre, platform or developer after every wrong letter. Clue Mode is the hardest: you start from a zoomed-in piece of box art and must type the exact title, with each miss zooming out and adding a clue, over five tries. Image Mode shows a single screenshot and Box Art Mode a partly hidden cover, and in both you pick the answer from a list. Puzzle Mode is a short bonus where you shuffle and rebuild a cover from tiles.

The day rolls over at midnight UTC, and a streak grows only when you win on consecutive days. The home page shows how many players solved each mode that day. There is also an endless letter mode, a multiplayer letter mode in beta, an archive of past games, and optional accounts with stats and badges. It suits players who grew up on cartridges and discs and like a mix of word and picture puzzles.

How to play Retro Game Trivia

  1. Start with the daily Letter Reveal mode from the home page.
  2. Guess letters in the game's title; each wrong letter reveals a new clue.
  3. Fill in the title before you run out of guesses.
  4. Try Clue Mode next: type the exact title from a zoomed box art picture, with five tries.
  5. Pick the right game from a list in Image Mode and Box Art Mode.
  6. Finish with the cover tile puzzle, then come back after midnight UTC.

Tips

  • Guess common letters such as E, A and O first in Letter Reveal.
  • In Clue Mode spelling must be exact, so check subtitles and punctuation before you submit.
  • Some games are known by different names in different regions; the site accepts common regional names when it can.
  • If you play late at night, the streak counts by UTC days, so check the time before midnight UTC.
