Name the right answer nobody else thought of: one daily question, a safe bet, a long shot and 60 seconds.

Every day: One question a day, the same for every player, asking you to name something from a set (a Shakespeare tragedy, an EU member state, a Premier League club). You give a safe bet and a long shot within 60 seconds; the next day the counts come in and the rarest correct answer wins. New puzzle: 07:00 UTC; the day's question closes 24 hours after it opens and its results appear then.

A Rarish practice round: the question Name a feature film directed by Steven Spielberg, a 60 second timer, and Safe bet and Long shot answer boxes

Rarish is a daily quiz where being right is not enough: you want the correct answer the fewest other players gave. Everyone gets the same question, you have 60 seconds to lock in a safe bet and a long shot, and the next day you see how many people said the same as you.

About Rarish

Rarish turns a general knowledge question on its head. Each day there is one question with many correct answers, such as naming a feature film directed by Steven Spielberg or a country in the EU, and every player gets the same one. The aim is not to find an answer but to find a correct one that few others will think of.

You get two answers. The safe bet is one you are sure is right; the long shot is riskier but rarer if it counts. The clock gives you 60 seconds from when you start, and the game asks you not to look anything up. If your long shot turns out to be wrong, your safe bet still stands, and the rarer of your valid answers is the one that counts.

The round stays open for a day. When it closes, the results show how many people gave each answer and place yours in a tier, from Commonest and Commonish up to Rarish, Rarest and, if nobody else said it, Unique. You can then copy a short result to share, and the next question is already waiting.

There is also a way to start a group with friends, so you can compare how differently you thought on the same question. First-time visitors can try a practice round on an older question before the real one, and closed days can be replayed just to see how an answer would have done, without changing anything.

How to play Rarish

  1. Open rarish.app and press the button to play today's question (new players get a practice round first).
  2. Start the clock, then type a safe bet: an answer you are sure is correct, and add it.
  3. Type a long shot: a correct answer you think few others will give, and add it before the 60 seconds run out.
  4. Finish to seal your answers, then come back the next day to see how many people gave each one and which tier yours reached.

Tips

  • Use the safe bet for something you are certain of, since a wrong long shot then costs you nothing.
  • Skip the first answers that come to mind; on a question like Spielberg films, most players will reach for the famous ones.
  • Think of answers at the edges of the set, such as the smallest member state or an early, little-known film, as long as you are sure they qualify.
  • Read the small print under the question: it sets rules such as theatrical release only, and an answer outside them does not count.

Questions

When does the Rarish question change?

Each day's question opens at 07:00 UTC and closes 24 hours later, when its results are revealed and the next question opens.

Why two answers?

The safe bet keeps you in the round if your riskier long shot is wrong. If both are valid, the rarer one is the one that counts.

How long do I have?

60 seconds from when you start the clock, and you are asked not to search.

Is Rarish free?

Yes. It runs in the browser and the site lists its price as zero.
