PopIdle80s, Guess the 80's album: a heavily pixelated dark album cover in black, grey and blue blocks beside a search box and a pink Guess button

PopIdle80s is the 1980s edition of PopIdle, the daily album cover game. Each day it shows one album cover from the 1980s, reduced to a few large coloured squares, and you search for the album you think it is. Wrong guesses bring the cover into sharper focus.

About PopIdle80s

PopIdle80s is one of the decade versions linked from PopIdle, the daily game about album artwork. Its daily puzzle, headed Guess the 80's album, takes an album released in the 1980s and shows its cover as a coarse grid of coloured blocks. There is nothing to listen to: the only clue is the picture.

You type in the search box, pick an album from the list and press Guess. As in the original PopIdle, a wrong answer brings the cover back a little less pixelated, so shapes, faces and lettering start to appear, and when you solve it or run out of attempts the full cover is shown. Everyone gets the same album each day.

The site has Today's Album, History and More Games pages, links to the other decade editions and to PopIdle itself, and is free in the browser with no account. It suits listeners who know the 1980s by their sleeves as well as their songs.

How to play PopIdle80s

  1. Look at the pixelated album cover.
  2. Start typing an album title in the search box and pick one from the list.
  3. Press Guess; a wrong guess makes the cover less pixelated.
  4. Keep guessing until you name the album or run out of attempts, then see the full cover.

Tips

  • Read the main colours first: many covers are remembered by a single strong colour or photo.
  • Look for a face or a block of lettering as the picture sharpens.
  • Think of the decade's biggest sellers before the obscure ones.
  • Play the other decade editions and the original PopIdle for more covers each day.
