Petit sémantique is a French word game on Ouest-France's games site. Each day it picks one mystery word and gives you a related starting word as a hint; you then have six tries to land on the word by guessing words close to it in meaning.

About Petit Sémantique (Ouest-France)

Petit sémantique was the first semantic game on jeux.ouest-france.fr, and it works on the same idea as Semantle and Cémantix: words are close when they tend to appear in the same contexts, so a near word need not be a synonym. The page gives the example of tondeuse and gazon, close in meaning without being synonyms or opposites.

Where Cémantix and Ouest-France's own Grand sémantique let you guess as long as you like, the small version is a six-try game. It starts you off with a hint word that already sits near the target, and each guess shows where it ranks among the words closest to the answer, so you can climb toward it quickly. When the round ends the game reveals the word and counts down to the next one, which arrives at midnight Paris time.

You get one free try without an account and ten free games once you sign in for free; after that the game asks you to take Ouest-France's games subscription. It suits French speakers who like semantic games but want something that fits in a coffee break.

Tips
