SUTOM is a daily French word game. The day's word has between 6 and 10 letters, its first letter is given, and every guess must start with that letter and be in the game's dictionary. Red squares mark letters in the right place, yellow circles letters in the wrong place, and you get six tries.

About SUTOM

SUTOM is a word game in French: the rules, the screen and the answers are all in French. It is made by JonathanMM, who started the project in January 2022 and keeps the code on Framagit. Its rules say it is based on Wordle and on Motus, the French television game show in which the first letter of the word is given, and the name is Motus spelt backwards.

Each day there is one word for everyone, between 6 and 10 letters long, and its first letter is already shown. Every guess must start with that letter and be a word in the game's dictionary; proper nouns are refused. After a guess, letters in the right place are marked with a red square, letters in the word but in the wrong place with a yellow circle, and the rest stay on the blue background. You have six tries.

The longer words make SUTOM a different exercise from five-letter Wordle: with eight or nine letters to fill, you build the word from its pieces, prefixes and endings rather than testing single letters. The rules ask players to share the result grid instead of the answer, since everyone has the same word that day. A statistics panel keeps your results.

SUTOM suits French speakers who grew up with Motus, and anyone who finds five letters too short.

How to play SUTOM

  1. Open sutom.nocle.fr and look at the length of today's word and its first letter, which is already in place.
  2. Type a French word of that length starting with the same letter, and press enter.
  3. Read the marks: a red square is a letter in the right place, a yellow circle a letter in the word but elsewhere, and blue means the letter is not there.
  4. Keep the red letters in place and move the yellow ones until you find the word, within six tries.
  5. Share the coloured grid rather than the word, and come back the next day for a new one.

Tips

  • Long French words often end in -ER, -ENT, -TION or -EMENT: use an early guess to test a common ending.
  • Since you know the first letter, the first guess is best spent on frequent letters such as E, A, R, S and T in the rest of the word.
  • Plurals and conjugated verbs are in the dictionary, which helps when you need a word with specific letters to test.
