Pédantix
Uncover the day's hidden French Wikipedia page word by word.
Every day: A new hidden French Wikipedia page each day, the same for everyone; you uncover its introduction word by word until you find the title. New puzzle: Noon French time.

Pédantix is a French daily game where you reveal the introduction of a hidden Wikipedia page by guessing the words in it. Words close in meaning show up greyed out, so you can tell when you are near. You win when the words of the page's title appear, and a new page comes every day at noon French time.
About Pédantix
Pédantix comes from the same site as Cémantix and is credited to enigmatix, with data from Wikipedia and Jean-Philippe Fauconnier. Instead of one secret word, you face the opening section of a French Wikipedia article with every word blacked out. The page shows a day number and the title of yesterday's page.
Each word you try is revealed everywhere it appears in the text. Words that are not in the text but close in meaning show up in grey in the boxes where nearby words sit, with the shade of grey matching how close they are, using the same measure as Cémantix. Pressing a black box shows how long the hidden word is. The masculine singular form of a word or the infinitive of a verb can be enough to reveal its other forms, and capitals are not needed. Title words are never greyed: they are either right or not.
You win when every word of the title is uncovered. The rules expect dozens of tries. Your ranking is your place among the day's solvers, not your number of guesses. When you are done you can show the whole page, reveal words one by one, or keep playing without spoilers. The site's FAQ advises avoiding the first minutes after noon, when many players arrive at once.
Pédantix suits players who enjoy general knowledge as much as words, since recognising the subject from a few revealed terms is half the game.
How to play Pédantix
- Look at the blacked-out introduction of the day's Wikipedia page.
- Type a French word and submit it; every place it appears is revealed.
- Watch the greyed words: they are close in meaning to a hidden word in that spot.
- Press a black box to see the length of a hidden word.
- Work out the subject and reveal all the words of the title to win.
Tips
- Start with common words such as est, une, qui, ville or pays to reveal the structure of the text.
- Dates and numbers often show up early in an article introduction and narrow down the subject fast.
- Use the length of the title words, shown by their boxes, once you have a guess for the subject.
