Word Chain on Word Nerd gives you two words a day that have nothing in common, such as senior and rent. You add words between them, each close enough in meaning to the one before, until the chain reaches the last word. The fewer words you add, the better your score.

About Word Chain (Wordnerd)

Word Chain is one of the small daily word games on Word Nerd, a site that has published bite-size word puzzles since 2024. Each day you get a first word and a last word that are not related. Your task is to bridge the gap by typing words that link them, the way dog leads to collar but not to lamp.

The game decides whether two words are related with word embeddings, a numerical model of meaning built from how words are used. After each word you add, it shows how close the end of your chain is to the target as a percentage. When the link is strong enough, the chain is complete. Because embeddings follow usage rather than a dictionary, two words you think of as close can score low when one of them has several meanings, which is part of the challenge.

When you finish, the game tells you how many words you added and shows the best solution it knows; some days the best chain has only one word in the middle. You can share your score or give up and see the answer. Played days, streak and average are kept in your browser.

The puzzle number is counted from 12 March 2024 in UTC, so a new pair appears at midnight UTC. The game is free and needs no account.

How to play Word Chain (Wordnerd)

  1. Open Word Chain and read the day's first and last words.
  2. Type a word related to the first word and submit it.
  3. Watch the percentage that shows how close your chain now is to the last word.
  4. Keep adding related words until the game accepts the link to the last word.
  5. Compare the number of words you added with the best solution, then share your score.

Tips

  • Think of words that are used in the same sentences as the target, not just synonyms.
  • Avoid words with many meanings; the model may place them far from what you intended.
  • Try a bold jump first: one well-chosen word in the middle often finishes the chain.
  • If a word scores low, back off to a more common, general word in the same area.
