Wordspool is a free daily word-association game. You start on one word with a goal word at the top of the screen, and the words around you are all related to the one you are standing on. Step from word to word until you reach the goal, ideally in par, the shortest possible route.

About Wordspool

Wordspool, by Coubrough Games, was published on itch.io in September 2026 and is played at wordspool.app. It is an association game rather than a spelling game: there are no letters to guess, only links between meanings. The example on the page goes Fish, Ocean, Beach, Sun, Planet.

The word you are on sits large in the centre, with four related words around it and fainter ones further out. Tap one to move there, and the pool around you changes to the words related to your new word. Words you have already visited are coloured differently, and the trail of your route runs along the bottom of the screen. The game shows your moves against par, the shortest route from start to goal, which is worked out when the puzzle is dealt. A hint tells you how many steps still lie between you and the goal, and you can restart at any time.

Each morning a pool of a hundred words is cut from a large vocabulary built from the open datasets Open English WordNet and ConceptNet, and that pool is the whole board until the next day. The menu offers today's puzzle as the daily challenge, plus new puzzles from the same pool. Every puzzle has a four-digit code you can send a friend so they play the same start and goal, valid only for that day's pool. The share link carries the code, the par and your moves but not your route.

Points go to a weekly leaderboard, with views for the top 100 and the players around you; you can add a first name and initial if you want to appear by name. Wordspool is free in the browser, with no download and no sign-up, and has a dark mode.

How to play Wordspool

  1. Open Wordspool and start today's puzzle from the Daily challenge.
  2. Read the goal word at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap one of the related words around the word you are standing on to move to it.
  4. Keep stepping through related words until you land on the goal.
  5. Compare your moves with par, then share your result or try a new puzzle from the day's pool.

Tips

  • Think about what the goal word belongs with: tea links to milk, cocoa and sugar more readily than to sport.
  • Broad words such as bottle or water connect to many areas and make good stepping stones.
  • Use the hint to see how many steps remain before committing to a long detour.
  • Links can follow different senses of a word, so bank can lead to river or to money.
