This OWdle (not to be confused with owdle.guessing.day) is run by the maker of Deadlockle and WuWadle. Its Classic mode gives eight guesses: type a hero and see eight tiles coloured green for a match, yellow for close and red for far, with arrows pointing toward the answer on numeric attributes, and a hint after a few guesses.

The other four daily modes use different senses. Sound plays an ability sound effect, longer with each miss. Quote shows two heroes talking before a match, and you have to identify both. Spotlight shows a thin slice of skin art that zooms out after each wrong guess, and Ability uncovers a hidden ability icon tile by tile. A Melee bonus mode gives three tries to name a hero from one melee swing, and a map mode is planned.

The date and a countdown sit at the top of each mode, with a tally of how many of the day's five you have finished and a streak. Past days are in the archive. It is free and unofficial.

It suits Overwatch players who know the roster by ear as well as by sight.

How to play OWdle (playowdle.com)

1. Open Classic and type a hero's name.
2. Read the eight tiles: green matches, yellow is close, red is far, and arrows point toward the answer.
3. Narrow it down within eight guesses, with a hint after four.
4. Play Sound, Quote, Spotlight and Ability, where each miss reveals more.
5. Come back after 2:15 a.m. Pacific for the next set, or replay past days from the archive.

Tips

• Use role and release order in Classic to split the roster quickly.
• In Sound, listen for weapon type: hitscan, projectile or melee narrows it fast.
• Pre-match lines often reference a hero's history with the other speaker.
• Spotlight crops show colours from a skin, so think of heroes' signature palettes.
