Overheard

Read a snippet of overheard conversation and guess who the two speakers are to each other.

Every day: One dialogue a day, the same for every player: read a short overheard conversation, revealed a line at a time, and guess how the two speakers are related before three wrong guesses. New puzzle: Once a day (the site does not state the hour).

Overheard is a small daily reading puzzle. Two people talk in six short lines, and you pick their relationship from a list: coworkers or work rivals, landlord and tenant, siblings, ex-partners, old friends and more. Reveal fewer lines and guess right to do better.

About Overheard

Overheard asks you to read the room. Each day's puzzle is a short exchange between two speakers, A and B, up to six lines long. You start with only the first line or two and can click to reveal the next sentence. At any point you can choose an answer from a list of relationships, such as coworkers, work rivals, boss and employee, roommates, neighbours, landlord and tenant, a new couple, ex-partners, siblings, old friends, teacher and student or strangers.

Wrong guesses are crossed out, and the round ends after three of them, when the full dialogue is shown. The fun is in the subtext: a line like 'Well, enjoy the promotion' reads very differently between friends and between rivals. Puzzles are tagged by difficulty, and the hardest ones hinge on a single word.

The game is free in the browser. Logging in saves your statistics, including how many clues you used in each win. Everyone gets the same dialogue each day, so results are easy to compare.

It suits players who enjoy word games but want something about tone and meaning rather than spelling.

How to play Overheard

  1. Open overheardgame.com and read the first lines of today's dialogue.
  2. Click to reveal the next sentence if you need more context.
  3. Pick the relationship you think the two speakers have from the list.
  4. If you are wrong, the choice is crossed out; you have three wrong guesses in all.
  5. See the full conversation and your stats, and come back tomorrow for a new one.

Tips

  • Look for who gives orders and who asks permission; it separates boss and employee from coworkers.
  • Shared history ('like last time') points to old friends, siblings or exes rather than strangers.
  • Guess early only when a line clearly gives it away; revealed lines count, but wrong guesses end the round.
