Jumble Daily
That scrambled word game: unscramble four words, then solve the cartoon pun.
Every day: The day's newspaper Jumble, the same for everyone: four scrambled words to unscramble, then the circled letters spell the pun answer to a cartoon riddle. New puzzle: Once a day, with that day's newspaper puzzle.

Jumble Daily is the online version of the newspaper Jumble that has run in American papers since 1954. Each day you unscramble four words; letters in circled squares then make up the answer to a cartoon caption, nearly always a groan-worthy pun. It is free on the Chicago Tribune's game site, Jumble's official home online.
About Jumble Daily
The Jumble is one of the longest-running puzzles in American newspapers. It first appeared in 1954, was drawn and written for decades by Henri Arnold and Bob Lee, and is now made by puzzle writer David L. Hoyt and cartoonist Jeff Knurek for Tribune Content Agency, which syndicates it to hundreds of papers. Jumble's own website now sends players to the Chicago Tribune's free games site, where the daily puzzle is played online.
The puzzle has two stages. First come four jumbled words, such as IDOVA or SEHEYC, each with its own row of boxes; unscramble each into a real word. Some boxes in each answer are circled. Then look at the day's cartoon and its caption: the circled letters, rearranged, spell the answer to the caption, usually a pun on something in the drawing.
That second stage is what sets the Jumble apart from plain anagram games: the first four words are warm-up, and the joke is the real puzzle. The online version adds hints and a check for your answers, and the same hub carries the bigger Sunday Jumble, a Jumble Crossword, TV Jumble and a Jumble for children.
It suits anyone who reads the comics page, and it is quick: a few minutes for most days, longer when the pun is a stretch.
How to play Jumble Daily
- Unscramble the first jumbled word and type it into its boxes.
- Do the same for the other three words.
- Collect the letters that fall in the circled boxes of your four answers.
- Read the cartoon and its caption, then rearrange the circled letters to spell the answer, usually a pun.
- Use the hints if you are stuck, and come back tomorrow for the next Jumble.
Tips
- Look for common pairs such as TH, CH, ER and -ING endings in the scrambled words.
- Try the cartoon answer before all four words are done: the caption and blanks often give it away.
- The answer is nearly always a pun, so say candidate phrases out loud.
