Histodle's Question of the Day: a description of an 1812 battle during the invasion of Russia tagged Modern History, score 1000, and three rows of empty letter boxes for the event's name

Histodle is a daily history word puzzle. The Question of the Day describes a historical event and gives its era and year, and you type the event's name into rows of letter boxes, one row per word. Coloured feedback shows which letters are right, and your score starts at 1000.

About Histodle

Histodle mixes a history quiz with Wordle's letter feedback. Each day there is one question: a sentence or two about a historical event, tagged with its period (such as Modern History) and its year. On 3 October 2026 it described a bloody engagement of 1812 during the invasion of Russia, where the French won tactically but at enormous cost.

Below the clue, the event's name is laid out as rows of empty boxes, one row for each word, so you can see how many words and letters the answer has. You type your answer and press Guess. Letters turn green when they are right, yellow when they are close and red when wrong, and you keep refining until the name is complete. An Autocomplete Word button fills in a word if you are stuck, at a cost to your score, and you can surrender to see the answer.

The score starts at 1000 and keeps your daily results and statistics on your device. The site also has a history blog and quizzes. It is free in the browser.

It suits players who know their history and like the Wordle format, but want the answer to be a battle, treaty or revolution rather than a five-letter word.

How to play Histodle

  1. Read the Question of the Day: the event's description, era and year.
  2. Look at the letter boxes to see how many words and letters the event's name has.
  3. Type your answer into the boxes and press Guess.
  4. Use the colours: green is correct, yellow is close, red is wrong.
  5. Complete the name to finish, or use Autocomplete Word for help at a cost to your score.

Tips

  • The year and the era narrow it down a lot; think of the famous events of that year first.
  • Short words in the name are often 'of' or 'the', which gives away the pattern of a battle or treaty name.
  • Fill the words you are sure of first and use their colours to guide the rest.
  • Keep Autocomplete for the last word you cannot place; every use costs points.
