Light Up, also known as Akari, asks you to place light bulbs in a grid of white and black cells until every white cell is lit, without two bulbs seeing each other. Puzzle-light-up.com has a Special Daily Light Up for all players each day, plus grids from 7x7 to 25x25 and weekly and monthly specials.
About Daily Light Up
A Light Up board mixes white cells with black walls. A bulb placed in a white cell lights its whole row and column until a wall stops the light. Every white cell must end up lit, and no bulb may sit in the light of another. Some walls carry a number from 0 to 4, which says how many bulbs touch that wall along its sides; walls without a number can have any count.
The Special Daily Light Up on puzzle-light-up.com is a single board per date that every player shares, and its date is shown under the grid. The board for 2 October 2026 was 30 by 30, larger than the standard 25x25. The site also has Easy, Normal and Hard boards in 7x7, 10x10, 14x14 and 25x25, weekly and monthly specials, and a Hall of Fame for the standard sizes. It is free with ads, patrons can remove them, and the site links to the PuzzleGym app for iPhone and Android, which includes Light Up. Patrons of the site can go back through the last 30 daily puzzles; everyone else plays the current day's.
Light Up has few rules and is quick to learn, so it suits newcomers to grid logic, while the big daily board still takes a while for regular solvers.
How to play Daily Light Up
- Open the Special Daily Light Up on puzzle-light-up.com; the puzzle's date is shown beneath the board.
- Left-click a white cell to place a bulb; it lights its row and column up to the nearest black cell.
- Right-click a cell to mark it with an X where no bulb can go.
- Match each numbered black cell: it must have exactly that many bulbs on the cells sharing its sides.
- Keep bulbs out of each other's light, and keep going until every white cell is lit.
- Submit the finished board to check it and see your time.
Tips
- A 4 has bulbs on all four sides, and a 0 has none: start with those and mark the cells around a 0 with X.
- A 3 against an edge or wall has only three open sides, so all three get bulbs.
- Look for a white cell that only one free cell can light; that cell must hold a bulb.
- After placing a bulb, mark every cell it lights so you do not put a second bulb in its line.
Questions
Is Light Up the same as Akari?
Yes. The site gives Akari as the other name for the puzzle.
When does the daily Light Up change?
Once a day, at midnight UTC, by the date on the site's own clock.
Do unnumbered black cells limit bulbs?
No. Only numbered black cells say how many bulbs must touch them; plain black cells just block the light.
