Commander Codex
Guess the Magic: The Gathering Commander of the Day in six tries from its card properties.
Every day: One Commander of the Day from EDHREC's top 500 Magic: The Gathering commanders, the same for everyone, in six tries. Each guess is compared on colour identity, mana value, initial printing, power plus toughness and subtypes. A countdown shows when the next daily comes. New puzzle: Midnight UTC.

Commander Codex is a Wordle-style daily game for Magic: The Gathering players, presented by the deckbuilding site Archidekt. You guess commanders from EDHREC's top 500, and each guess shows how its colour identity, mana value, release, power and toughness and subtypes compare with the hidden card. Six tries, one Commander of the Day for everyone.
About Commander Codex
Commander Codex is built for players of Commander, Magic's most popular casual format. Every guess must be one of the 500 most played commanders on EDHREC, and the answer each day is one of them too. It is presented by Archidekt, a free deckbuilding site.
Each guess fills a row with five clues. Colour ID turns green on an exact match and yellow when colours overlap without matching. Mana Value (CMC) shows green when equal or an arrow otherwise. Initial Printing shows whether the answer was released before or after your guess, and Power + Toughness compares the sum of the two. Subtypes go green, yellow or grey depending on how many creature types are shared. The help screen walks through an example where the answer is Queen Marchesa and the guesses are Kaalia of the Vast, Omnath, Locus of Creation and Selvala, Heart of the Wilds.
The daily game gives six tries; when it is over a timer shows when the next daily puzzle comes at midnight UTC. A shuffle button switches to an infinite mode with random commanders, and a stats screen keeps your daily distribution. A colour blind mode adds symbols to each square.
How to play Commander Codex
- Open commandercodex.com; the game starts in Daily Mode.
- Type a commander's name in the Guess a card box and pick it.
- Read the five clues: colour identity, mana value, initial printing, power plus toughness and subtypes.
- Use green, yellow and the arrows to narrow down the next commander.
- Find the Commander of the Day within six tries, or switch to infinite mode for more.
Tips
- Open with a three or four colour commander to test colour identity broadly.
- The release arrow narrows the era quickly; follow it with a commander from the middle of that range.
- Power + Toughness is a sum, so a 3/3 and a 2/4 give the same clue.
- Use View Cards to browse the eligible commanders when you are stuck.
