Bearing day 40 three-source puzzle: a compass dial with marked points and the possible bearings for each source

Bearing is a daily direction-finding puzzle on Arkai. Two or three sound sources hide at points on a 16-point compass; each listen tells you which way each one pulls, which matches either a point in front of you or its mirror behind. Turn and listen again to pin them down, mark their bearings, and finish within par.

About Bearing (Arkai)

Bearing is one of the daily deduction puzzles on Arkai, a small portal of free browser games that run without an account, ads or third-party code.

Each day there are two puzzles, one with two hidden sources and one with three, worked out on your device from the date, so everyone gets the same ones. You face one of 16 compass headings and press Listen. Each source pulls left or right in your ears, and the game also prints what that means, such as Source 1: NE or SE. One listen always leaves two possibilities, a bearing ahead and its mirror behind, so you turn to a new heading and listen again; the point the two answers share is the source.

You mark one compass point per source and press Check. Each listen costs a point and a wrong check costs two, and matching the par, which is what a careful two-heading triangulation needs, earns a star. You can share a spoiler-free result, and arrows on the title screen open every earlier day, though those do not count for your streak.

Headphones help but are not needed, since every cue is also written next to the dial and announced for screen readers. It suits players who like small, exact deduction puzzles with a single clever idea.

How to play Bearing (Arkai)

  1. Open Bearing and pick today's two-source or three-source puzzle.
  2. Turn your heading with the arrow buttons or the left and right keys.
  3. Press Listen to hear each source and read the pair of bearings it could be.
  4. Turn to a different heading and listen again to rule out the mirror bearing.
  5. Mark one compass point per source and press Check, aiming to match the par.

Tips

  • Your second listen should be from a heading well away from the first, so the mirrored pairs differ.
  • Marks are free: mark the shared point of two readings before you spend another listen.
  • A wrong check costs two points, more than an extra listen, so only check when every source is certain.
