Zénigme's Five letters game mid-play, with three guesses coloured green, yellow and grey above the keyboard

Zénigme is an Android puzzle app with more than 40 small games, from crosswords and a five-letter word guesser to sudoku, nonograms and a crowns grid. Each game has a new grid every day, the same for every player, and the app has no ads, no purchases and no account.

About Zénigme: Crossword & Sudoku

Zénigme is a collection of daily puzzles for Android made by Jérôme Andrieu, a French developer. It holds more than 40 games on four shelves: word games, grids with clues, numbers and maths, and logic. Each game has its own dated grid for the day, shared by everyone who plays it.

The word shelf has a five-letter guessing game with green and yellow letters, a secret word you close in on through alphabetical order within a theme, a letter wheel, word search, hangman, a word pyramid and a flash definition. The clue shelf has full crosswords, mini crosswords, a cryptogram of a famous quote, word chains, groups of four and missing proverbs. For numbers there is sudoku, kakuro, a target number from six tiles and a mystery equation; the logic shelf has crowns (one per row, column and colour zone), suns and moons, nonograms, bridges, linked colour pairs and a code to crack.

The app plays in English, French, Spanish and German, and the word games are written for each language rather than translated, so a French player gets a French word of the day. Tap a word you found and it shows its definition with translations into the other three languages.

Around the daily grids there are streaks, levels, trophies, a weekly challenge and a marathon that runs every game of the day against the clock. Past days stay open in a calendar, a free play mode gives extra grids, and an optional ranking compares your times with other players and sorts them into weekly leagues using only a nickname. Two players on the same Wi-Fi can solve one grid together or race each other.

Zénigme has no ads, no in-app purchases and no subscription, and it works offline. It suits someone who likes a newspaper puzzle page and wants many short puzzles in one place rather than a single game.

How to play Zénigme: Crossword & Sudoku

  1. Install Zénigme from Google Play and choose English, French, Spanish or German.
  2. Pick a game from the word, clue, number or logic shelves; each shows today's date and a new grid.
  3. Read the illustrated tutorial the first time you open a game, then solve the grid: guess the word, fill the crossword, place the crowns or reach the target number.
  4. Use a hint if you are stuck: the first gives a clue, a later one gives the answer.
  5. After solving, read the explained solution with word definitions, then move to the next game or open the calendar to play a day you missed.

Tips

  • Try the marathon only once you know the rules of each game, since it runs every grid of the day in a row against the clock.
  • In Secret word, guess words near the middle of the alphabet first to halve the range, as the hints only tell you before or after.
  • In Crowns, look for a colour zone that fits inside a single row or column: its crown rules out that line for every other zone.
  • Turn on the daily reminder or the home screen widget if you want to keep a streak going.
