Word Chain (PuzzleLab)

Build a small crossword from the day's 32 letter tiles, six at a time.

Every day: One daily set of 32 letter tiles, generated from the day's seed so everyone gets the same letters, to build into a connected crossword on an 8 by 8 board. One daily game per day; practice boards are unlimited. New puzzle: Midnight Pacific Time (the daily seed uses the date in Pacific time).

Word Chain is a daily word puzzle on PuzzleLab. You drag letters from a six-tile tray onto an 8 by 8 board to build connected words, scoring more for big turns, and try to place all 32 tiles. Everyone gets the same letters each day.

About Word Chain (PuzzleLab)

Word Chain is one of the daily puzzles on PuzzleLab, a free browser site of word and number games that needs no sign-up. The board is an 8 by 8 grid with a tray of six letters beneath it. The 32 letters you are dealt for the day come from a hidden crossword the game built from the day's seed, so the tiles always fit together somehow; your job is to make them fit your own way.

Each turn you drag up to six tray letters onto the board and submit. Every run of two or more letters across or down has to be a valid word, and all the letters on the board have to stay connected. A good turn locks the tiles in place and refills the tray from the pool. A bad one costs 5 points.

Scoring rewards long turns: one tile is worth 1 point, four are worth 5, five are worth 10 and a full tray of six is worth 15. Placing all 32 tiles adds a 20 point bonus. You can shuffle the tray twice per game. At the end the game shows the words you made next to the words it hid in the letters.

The daily board uses the date in Pacific time, so it changes at midnight there, and once you finish it the daily is locked until the next one. A practice mode gives fresh random boards whenever you want more. The site keeps a streak across its daily games.

How to play Word Chain (PuzzleLab)

  1. Open Word Chain on PuzzleLab and start the daily puzzle.
  2. Drag up to six letters from the tray onto the 8 by 8 board.
  3. Make sure every line of two or more letters, across and down, is a word and that everything is connected.
  4. Submit the turn; valid tiles lock in place and the tray refills, while an invalid turn costs 5 points.
  5. Keep going until all 32 tiles are placed or you run out of moves, then compare your words with the hidden ones.

Tips

  • Playing five or six tiles in one turn scores far more than several small turns, so plan big words.
  • Leave open ends on the board where later letters can hook on.
  • Save your two shuffles for a tray full of awkward letters.
  • A failed submission costs 5 points, so check every crossing word before you submit.
