About Warmer (Mind Loft)

Warmer is a guess-by-meaning word game on Mind Loft, a free site of daily browser games, in the same family as Semantle and Contexto. Each day there is one secret word, the same for everyone, and nothing to start from.

Every guess lands on a colour scale from cold to hot, along with an exact proximity rank, so you can feel your way from freezing towards scorching and finally to the word itself. Closeness is about meaning, not spelling: if the answer were "sea", words like ocean, waves and coast would run hot while unrelated words stayed cold.

Guesses are unlimited, so everyone can reach the answer. The challenge is to do it in as few guesses as possible, and solvers are ranked by that number. If you give up, you are still ranked by the closest word you found. There is also a Hint button, and the header keeps your guess count, your closest word so far and a clock.

A new word goes up at midnight US Eastern Time. Mind Loft suggests Crux, Outrank and Links alongside it.

2. Type any word as a guess.
3. See how close it is in meaning, on a cold-to-hot scale with a rank.
4. Use the warmest guesses so far to choose related words and close in.
5. Find the secret word in as few guesses as you can; giving up still ranks your closest word.

• Start with broad words from different areas, such as an animal, a feeling, a place and an action, to find a warm direction.
• Once something is warm, try synonyms and words used in the same sentences.
• The rank matters more than the colour when you are close.
• Try different parts of speech; the answer may be a verb when your guesses are all nouns.
