About Vorto (NRC)

Vorto is the Dutch newspaper NRC's version of Wordle, a short puzzle NRC pitches as one for with your coffee. Each day there is one hidden Dutch word, and you have up to six tries to find it. There are two versions: one with five letters and one with six, and according to a Dutch article on the game the six-letter version has become the more popular of the two.

As in Wordle, after each guess the game shows which letters are in the right place, which are in the word but in another place, and which are not in the word at all. The technical side is built by the puzzle studio Q42, and the five-letter answers come from a list of words that NRC supplies and keeps up to date.

Vorto appears every day on nrc.nl and in the NRC Puzzels app for iPhone, which also keeps your puzzle streak and holds NRC's other games such as Precies Vier. It is for NRC subscribers. It suits Dutch speakers who want Wordle in their own language, and learners who want a daily dose of Dutch spelling.

How to play Vorto (NRC)

1. Open Vorto on nrc.nl or in the NRC Puzzels app and choose the five-letter or six-letter version.
2. Type a Dutch word of the right length as your first guess.
3. Read the feedback: letters in the right place, letters in the word but elsewhere, and letters not in the word.
4. Use those clues to make your next guess.
5. Find the word within six tries.

Tips

• An analysis of Dutch letter positions found benen a strong opener when you aim for letters in the right spot.
• For five different common letters, boren scored best in the same analysis; rare letters such as Z and Q make weak openers.
