Precies Vier ("exactly four") is NRC's daily word-grouping puzzle in Dutch. Sixteen tiles hide four groups of four that share a link, and you have six attempts to find them all, past words that seem to fit more than one group. It appears every day on nrc.nl and in the NRC Puzzels app, for NRC subscribers.

About Precies Vier (NRC)

Precies Vier is the Dutch newspaper NRC's answer to Connections. Each day you get a grid of sixteen tiles and have to split them into four groups of four that have something in common. The puzzle has run since around May 2024, and players have noted openly how close it is to the New York Times game; the difference is that the links come from Dutch language and culture.

The groups can be about anything: jobs, cities, television series, music, slang, or words that go before or after another word. The puzzle sets traps on purpose, with more than four tiles that seem to fit a theme and words with two meanings. You have six attempts in all. If you are stuck you can shuffle the tiles or clear your selection and start again.

Precies Vier is published every day on nrc.nl and in the NRC Puzzels app for iPhone, which keeps your streak. It is for NRC subscribers. It suits Dutch speakers who play Connections and want one built on their own language, and learners with a good grasp of Dutch idiom.

How to play Precies Vier (NRC)

  1. Open Precies Vier on nrc.nl or in the NRC Puzzels app.
  2. Look over the sixteen tiles and find four that share a link.
  3. Select the four and submit them as a group.
  4. Repeat until all four groups are found, with no more than six attempts in total.
  5. Shuffle the tiles or clear your selection when you need a fresh look.

Tips

  • Do not submit the first four tiles that seem to belong together: there are usually five or more candidates for a group.
  • If three tiles fit and the fourth does not, leave that group and solve another one first.
  • Think about words that can stand before or after another word, and about double meanings.
  • Simple series such as seasons or compass points are often there as a decoy.
