Palabro is the daily hidden-word game of the Spanish newspaper El Mundo. It is free, with an ad before the game and a free registration to keep playing and save progress.

About Palabro (El Mundo)

Palabro is the Wordle-style word game of El Mundo, the Madrid newspaper. Each day there is one hidden word, and you have up to six tries to find it. El Mundo calls it its daily letters challenge, and the puzzle is the same for every player on a given date.

The word and every guess have five letters and must be in the dictionary of the Real Academia Española. Prefixes, suffixes and conjugated verb forms are not allowed, and the game is played without accents, so you never have to type a tilde even when the word has one. After each guess the letters turn green when they are in the right place, yellow when they are in the word but somewhere else, and stay grey when they are not in the word.

Palabro is free and plays in the browser after a short advert; El Mundo asks you to register at no cost to keep playing and save your progress on any device. Past days are in an archive, and the same page links to the paper's other dailies: Letrerío, a crossword, a word search, memory and sudokus. It suits Spanish speakers who want Wordle in their own language, with the RAE as referee.

How to play Palabro (El Mundo)

  3. Read the colours: green is the right letter in the right place, yellow is in the word but elsewhere, grey is not in the word.
  4. Use the clues to make your next guess.
  5. Find the word within six tries, then share your result.

Tips

  • Open with a word rich in common Spanish vowels and consonants, such as A, E, O, R, S and N.
  • Remember that conjugated verbs are never the answer, but infinitives and nouns can be.
  • Do not worry about accents: the game ignores them.
