Seldom

The daily trivia game where rare beats obvious.

Every day: One shared prompt each day, such as "Name something that comes before the word bell". You give five answers and each scores how many of 100 surveyed people gave the same answer, so rarer answers score lower. Everyone plays the same prompt that day, and past prompts sit in a dated archive. New puzzle: Once a day.

Seldom title with the tagline the daily trivia game where rare beats obvious, above its yellow, orange and black score squares

Seldom gives you one prompt a day and asks for five answers. Your score for each is how many out of 100 people would have said the same thing, and lower is better. Find a valid answer nobody else gives and you score a Seldom.

About Seldom

Seldom is a daily browser trivia game built around popularity, not correctness. Each day there is one open prompt, for example "Name a fruit" or "Name something that comes before the word bell". The twist is that common answers are bad: the fewer people who share your answer, the better you do.

The survey behind the scores is framed as 100 people, described on the page as roughly 78 Americans, 16 Brits and 6 Australians, so answers known in only one country tend to score low. An answer that nobody in the 100 gave scores zero, which the game calls a Seldom.

Each day you get five tries and submit five different answers to the same prompt, aiming for the lowest total. The prompt is the same for everyone that day, and a Puzzle Archive lists past puzzles by date and number so you can play ones you missed.

It suits people who like word association and trivia but want something lighter than a quiz, and who enjoy second-guessing what the crowd would say in order to avoid it.

How to play Seldom

  1. Read the day's prompt, such as "Name something that comes before the word bell".
  2. Type an answer you think few people would give.
  3. Submit it and see its score out of 100 people.
  4. Give five different valid answers in total, keeping each score as low as you can.
  5. Aim for a zero, which the game marks as a Seldom.

Tips

  • Obvious answers score near 100, so skip the first thing that comes to mind.
  • Answers known mainly in one country tend to score low, since most of the surveyed people are elsewhere.
  • Keep answers clearly valid for the prompt: a rare answer only counts if it actually fits.
