Sanuli
Guess the hidden Finnish word in six tries.
Every day: Päivän sanuli: one five-letter Finnish word a day, the same for every player, to find in six tries; the other modes can be replayed without limit. New puzzle: Midnight in your own time zone (the daily word follows the device's local date).

Sanuli is a free Finnish version of the five-letter word guessing game. Its daily mode gives everyone the same word each day to find in six tries, and the other modes let you keep playing with relay chains, six-letter words or four words at once.
About Sanuli
Sanuli has been around since the start of 2022, when the five-letter word craze reached Finland. It is an open-source hobby project by the developer known as Cadiac, written in Rust and run in the browser. The guess lists come from the Institute for the Languages of Finland (Kotus) list of modern Finnish words, adjusted over time from players' suggestions.
The daily mode, Päivän sanuli, is the one shared by all players: a five-letter word drawn from its own list, pitched between the normal and the hard lists, and the same for everyone on a given day. You type a valid Finnish word and the letters turn grey if they are not in the answer, yellow if they are in it but in another place, and green if they are placed right. A colour-blind setting swaps yellow and green for blue and orange.
Around the daily word there is a lot more to play. The basic mode deals new words as often as you like, at easy, normal or hard settings and with five or six letters. Sanuliketju chains games so that the word you solved becomes your first guess in the next one, and Neluli asks you to solve four words at once with nine shared guesses. Your own statistics and streak are kept in the browser.
How to play Sanuli
- Open Sanuli and choose Päivän sanuli in the game mode settings for the shared word of the day.
- Type a five-letter Finnish word and submit it.
- Read the colours: grey means the letter is not in the word, yellow that it is elsewhere, green that it is in the right place.
- Use what you learned in your next guess.
- Find the word within six tries, then share your result or switch to another mode to keep playing.
Tips
- Finnish uses a lot of vowels and doubled letters; a first guess such as one with A, I and E and common consonants like S, T and N rules out many words.
- Remember that ä and ö are separate letters with their own keys.
- The daily words come from a list between normal and hard, so expect everyday words but not only the most common ones.
- Try Sanuliketju when you want a harder game: you cannot pick your opening guess.
