Revertle

Avoid the Hidden Word: use its letters anywhere but their own spots.

Every day: One Hidden Word a day, the same for everyone, shown up front: use its letters in five-letter words without ever putting one in the same position as in the Hidden Word, stepping each letter from red to yellow to green within five guesses. New puzzle: Midnight, local time.

Revertle's rules: the Hidden Word SHUSH in red, example guesses TESTS, GUESS and HUSHY with red, yellow and green letters

Revertle flips Wordle's goal. You are shown the day's Hidden Word, its letters marked red on the keyboard. Each time you play one of those letters in a word, away from its spot in the Hidden Word, it moves a step from red to yellow to green; put it in its own spot and it resets to red. Turn every letter green in five guesses.

About Revertle

Revertle is a Wordle variant by Puppetsquid that has run a daily puzzle since 2022. Where Wordle hides the word, Revertle shows it to you; the puzzle is to avoid it.

Each day's Hidden Word is shown in red, as in the example SHUSH. You type ordinary five-letter words. Every time one of the Hidden Word's letters appears in your guess in a different position from where it sits in the Hidden Word, that letter advances one step, from red to yellow and from yellow to green. But if you put a letter in the very same position it holds in the Hidden Word, it turns red again and loses its progress.

You have five guesses to turn all the Hidden Word's letters green on the keyboard. You may not repeat a word, and every guess must contain at least one letter that is not in the puzzle. Easy and Hard modes change the strictness, a high-contrast and reversed-colour option help readability, and a separate Pride daily runs alongside the main one.

It suits Wordle players looking for a fresh constraint: instead of narrowing down a mystery, you are juggling letters you already know, which makes it a different kind of word search.

How to play Revertle

  1. Read the day's Hidden Word; its letters are marked red on the keyboard.
  2. Type a five-letter word using some of those letters, each in a different position from where it appears in the Hidden Word.
  3. Each correctly placed letter moves one step: red to yellow, yellow to green. A letter in its own Hidden Word position resets to red.
  4. Keep going, never repeating a word and always including at least one letter not in the puzzle.
  5. Win by turning every Hidden Word letter green within five guesses.

Tips

  • Plan two words ahead: each letter needs two good uses to go from red to green.
  • Words that use several puzzle letters at once save guesses, as long as none sits in its own spot.
  • Keep a list of letters already green so you do not waste positions on them.
