Queen (Mind Loft)
Walk a pawn to promotion against a perfect defending king, one endgame a day.
Every day: One king and pawn against king position a day, the same for every player: promote the pawn safely within the stated number of moves against a perfect defence. The move budget deepens through the week; the Sunday Edition is a win in twelve. Daily leaderboard. New puzzle: Midnight US Eastern Time.

Queen is a free daily chess endgame from Mind Loft. Each position is a king and one pawn against a lone king, and you must promote the pawn safely within a set number of moves while the computer defends perfectly. Only one first move keeps the win, and there is no take-back.
About Queen (Mind Loft)
Queen is one of the chess dailies on Mind Loft, a free site of daily browser games. Every position is the same kind of ending: your king and one pawn against the opponent's bare king. The position is a proven win, and the job is to walk the pawn to the eighth rank and promote it within the stated number of moves. On the day we looked it was promote in 9.
This is the endgame chess players are told to learn first, and the game plays it strictly. The defending king never makes a mistake. A promotion the defending king can capture at once, or one that leaves it stalemated, counts as a draw, as it would over the board. The ideas that decide it are the familiar ones: the opposition, spare pawn moves to lose a tempo, and the square of the pawn.
You tap your king or pawn and then the square it should go to; legal squares light up, so no notation is needed. Exactly one first move keeps the win within the budget, checked by two separate solvers, and there is no take-back. Hint, Give up and Restart sit under the board.
A new position goes up at midnight US Eastern Time. The move budget grows through the week, and the Sunday Edition is the longest walk, a win in twelve. Mind Loft pairs it with Mate (White to play and mate) and Defend (the same fight from the other side).

Tips
- Take the opposition: put your king directly opposite the defending king with one square between, when it is their move.
- Lead with the king, not the pawn; a pawn pushed too early often throws the win away.
- Count the square of the pawn to check whether the defending king can catch it.
- Keep a spare pawn move in hand to hand the move back to the defender when you need to.
