Chessarama is a paid collection of eight games built on chess pieces and their usual moves, each with its own goal and setting, from pushing a pawn past a dragon to a soccer match played with chess pieces. Beside its handcrafted campaigns it sets Daily and Weekly Challenges online, so there is something new to do each day, and leaderboards to compare with other players.
About Chessarama
Chessarama is a puzzle and strategy game from the Brazilian studio Minimol Games, released on Steam on 5 December 2023 and later on Xbox, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, the "Epic Games Store" and Android, where it is part of Google Play Pass. Every piece moves as it does in chess, but each of its eight games changes what you are trying to do: Farm Life, Dragon Slayers, Street Soccer, Lady Ronin, Last Stand, Knight Supreme, Pawn Mania and Soccer Chess.
In Dragon Slayers you walk a pawn to the end of a path while a dragon attacks the board after every move, so every piece you leave undefended dies. Lady Ronin mixes chess with Sokoban: your queen pushes other pieces as she moves toward the Shogun. Soccer Chess is a match where you plan a few moves ahead to break through a defence and score. Each game has a guided tutorial, and a Codex explains the rules at any time. A plain game of classic chess is included as well.
The campaigns hold more than 100 levels and more than 100 challenges, played on small diorama boards in a bright toy-like style, with 24 collectable chess figures to unlock. The daily part sits on top of that: the game fetches a set of Daily Challenges each day and Weekly Challenges each week, now called Live Challenges, which ask you to meet a goal in its modes, for example a number of wins without moving your King. Achievements mark finishing one Daily Challenge and finishing all of a day's. Leaderboards, with badge rewards, let you compare with other players.
Chessarama suits players who know how the pieces move and want puzzles that use that knowledge in new ways, and newer players who want to learn movement and tactics through something other than a plain board. It is a one-off purchase on each store, not a free web game, and the daily challenges need the game to be online.
How to play Chessarama
- Buy and install Chessarama on PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5, Switch or Android, and play the tutorial of the first game.
- Pick one of the eight games and work through its campaign levels; every piece moves as it does in chess, but the goal changes from game to game.
- Open the Live Challenges screen to see the day's Daily Challenges and the week's Weekly Challenges.
- Play the modes the challenges name and meet their goals, such as winning a match without moving your King.
- Check the leaderboards and come back the next day for a new set of Daily Challenges.

Tips
- Read the Codex when a new game's rules feel strange: it lists each mode's goals and the way pieces behave there.
- Do the day's challenges before the week's: finishing all of a day's Daily Challenges has its own achievement.
- In Dragon Slayers, move nothing until you have checked which squares the dragon will hit and which of your pieces are left undefended.

No. It is a paid game on Steam (US$14.99 at the time of writing), Xbox, PlayStation 5, Switch and the "Epic Games Store", and on Android it is sold on Google Play and included in Google Play Pass.
What is new each day in Chessarama?

Do I need to be good at chess?
No. Every game has a guided tutorial, and the game is made to teach how the pieces move and simple tactics. Knowing chess helps, but the goals are not those of a normal chess game.
