Boardle
Rate itGuess the whole winning line of a chess puzzle, with Wordle colours on each move.
Every day: A new chess puzzle every day, the same for everyone, in four sizes: Boardle Mini, Boardle, Boardle Mega and Boardle Maxi. New puzzle: Once a day.

Boardle is a free daily chess puzzle played like Wordle. You enter the best series of moves for both players, submit the line, and each move turns green if it is in the right spot or yellow if it belongs elsewhere in the solution. The puzzles come from lichess and are the same for everyone each day.
About Boardle
Boardle takes a chess tactic and turns it into a guessing game. Rather than playing one move and getting a reply, you write out the whole sequence: your move, the reply, your next move and so on, filling a row of tiles in standard algebraic notation.
When the row is full you press submit and the tiles change colour. A green move is in the solution and in the right place, a yellow move is in the solution but in a different spot, and a grey move is not part of it. You then try again with what you learned, over several attempts.
A move only counts when its notation is exact, so a capture that gives mate must be written with the mate sign. Besides the standard puzzle there are Boardle Mini, Boardle Mega and Boardle Maxi, which change the length of the line. The positions are taken from lichess.
It suits chess players who already read notation and want a daily tactic with a twist, and Wordle players who know the moves and want something other than letters.
How to play Boardle
- Open Boardle and pick a size: Mini, Boardle, Mega or Maxi.
- Play moves on the board for both sides; each one fills the next tile in algebraic notation.
- Use undo to take back a move before the row is full.
- Press submit and read the colours: green is right and in place, yellow is in the line but elsewhere, grey is not in it.
- Use the feedback to enter a better line on your next attempt until you find the solution.

Tips
- Look for checks and captures first: daily tactics usually start with a forcing move.
- Write the notation exactly, with + for check and # for mate, or a correct idea will show as wrong.
- A yellow move often means the right idea in the wrong order, so try swapping it with its neighbour.
Questions
Where do Boardle's puzzles come from?
The site says its puzzles are courtesy of lichess.
Is Boardle free?
Yes. It plays in the browser with no account.
Why was my right move marked wrong?
A move only counts with the exact notation, so Qxa8# and Qxa8 are not the same move.
