Shredder daily puzzle board asking to find the best move for black, with Easy, Medium, Hard and Day Before, Yesterday, Today buttons

Shredder's Chess Puzzle of the Day shows a fresh chess position at three difficulty levels every day. You find the best move, sometimes a series of moves, by dragging pieces on the board. Buttons let you switch between today, yesterday and the day before, and a hint is available if you are stuck.

About Shredder Chess Puzzle of the Day

The Chess Puzzle of the Day is a free tactics page on shredderchess.com, the site of Shredder, a chess engine by Stefan Meyer-Kahlen that has won the World Computer Chess Championship many times. The puzzle runs in a small board in the browser, with no account needed.

Each day the page offers three positions, labelled Easy, Medium and Hard, and every visitor gets the same ones. A line under the board tells you whose move it is, for example find the best move for black, and the board is turned so that side plays from the bottom.

You enter your answer by dragging a piece to its target square. Some puzzles need a sequence of moves, and the board replies with the opponent's move between your turns. A Hint button points you in the right direction, and Day Before and Yesterday buttons keep the two previous days' puzzles available. The board can be made bigger or smaller.

It suits club players and improving beginners who want a short daily tactic with a choice of difficulty, without signing up anywhere.

How to play Shredder Chess Puzzle of the Day

  • Try Easy first to warm up, then Medium and Hard on the same day.
  • Use the Hint button only after a real attempt, so you still find the idea yourself.
