One Star card: a gold star, the name One Star, The daily anime review game, and a sample 1-star review about nudist giants for three seasons

One Star is a free daily anime guessing game. An acclaimed anime hides behind five parody 1-star reviews, shown one at a time; you have five tries to name it. Each wrong guess reveals the next review, and on guesses 3 and 4 the year and genre appear too.

About One Star

One Star, called Une Etoile in its French version, turns well-loved anime into grumpy one-star reviews. In one, a reviewer signing as traumatised_firefighter complains that people spontaneously turn into creatures of fire and that firefighters have become combat soldiers. The joke is that the review describes the show accurately while missing the point, and you have to name the work.

You get five guesses. Type the title in the answer box; the autocomplete accepts French, English or Japanese titles. Each wrong guess, or a skip, reveals the next review as an extra clue, and on guesses 3 and 4 the year and genre of the work also appear.

A new numbered puzzle drops every day at midnight Paris time, the same for everyone. Each weekday has a theme: easy mainstream on Monday, shonen and action on Tuesday, animated films on Wednesday, recent anime from 2019 on Thursday, cult classics from the 90s and 2000s on Friday, niche and seinen titles on Saturday, and slice of life, sports and romance on Sunday.

How to play One Star

  1. Open One Star and read the first parody 1-star review.
  2. Type the anime's title in the answer box; French, English and Japanese titles are accepted.
  3. A wrong guess or a skip shows the next review.
  4. On guesses 3 and 4, use the year and genre that appear as extra hints.
  5. Name the anime within five guesses.

Tips

  • Check the day of the week: the theme tells you whether to think of films, recent shows or older classics.
  • Read past the complaint to the plot detail it gives away.
  • Saturday is the niche day, so start on a Monday if you are new.
