Matter
Rate itSpell nouns that turn into objects, and use them to destroy the day's three targets.
Every day: One dated theme a day with three target objects, such as Graveyard: raven, tombstone and skeleton, and a supply of letter tiles to spell nouns that defeat them. New puzzle: Once a day; each puzzle is dated (exact hour not stated).

Matter is a daily word game from The Lemma in which nouns become the objects they name. Each day has a theme and three target objects; from a supply of scored letter tiles you spell physical nouns that could be used on, thrown at or wielded against each target to destroy it. Long and rare words earn bonuses, and the fewer words you need, the better.
About Matter
Matter starts from a simple idea, shown on its title page: nouns become the objects they signify. Each dated puzzle has a theme and three targets. On the day seen here the theme was Graveyard and the targets were a raven, a tombstone and a skeleton, with a twist added to the rules: all bones are made of strong titanium. Your job is to spell physical nouns that could be used on, thrown at or otherwise wielded to destroy each target in turn.
You build words from a rack of letter tiles, each carrying a point value, with a counter showing how many letters remain from the day's supply. Drop tiles into the word area, press Play, and the noun is tried against the current target; a trash button and a shuffle button help you manage the rack. The how-to-play shows the scoring: a saw against a tree, with letter points added up, and bonuses for long and rare words.
The result screen compares you with other players by the average number of words used, so beating the targets with fewer, better nouns is the aim. The game runs in the browser; there is a sign-in on the title page, but Play starts without it. It suits players who like word-building games with a sense of humour about what words mean.
How to play Matter
- Press Play and read the day's theme, its three targets and any twist in the rules.
- Drag letter tiles from your rack into the word area to spell a physical noun.
- Press Play to use that object against the current target.
- Destroy each target in turn, watching your letter supply and using as few words as you can.
- Compare your result with the day's average when you finish.

Tips
- Read the twist before you start: it can rule out the obvious answer, as titanium bones did for a skeleton.
- Think about what an object could really do to the target, not only how many points its letters score.
- Long and rare nouns earn bonuses, so look for one strong word rather than several weak ones.
- Use shuffle to spot nouns hiding in your rack, and trash letters you cannot use.
