The HAGL board: rows of numbered tiles for the encoded items, the category Janelle Monae, Movies and TV, a Hint button, number tiles 1 to 26 and an orange letter keyboard

HAGL is a daily cipher puzzle from PZLR. Every letter of the alphabet is swapped for a number, and you work out the code to reveal a list of thirteen items from the day's category, such as the films and TV shows of one actor.

About HAGL (PZLR)

HAGL is one of the daily word games on PZLR, a puzzle site designed and built by two friends who sign as Rob and J. The name is said like haggle and stands for Hazard A Guess (Letter). Each day brings a new category and a new cipher, and every player gets the same category, the same cipher and the same order of hints.

The board lists thirteen encoded items, each word shown as a row of numbered tiles. Every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number from 1 to 26, and the only help at the start is the category, on one day Janelle Monae, Movies and TV. You pick a letter from the keyboard and match it to a number by clicking, tapping, dragging or typing, and each placement fills that letter in everywhere in the list, so short words and unusual spellings unlock the rest.

A Hint button reveals a letter when you are stuck, and the game counts your moves. Settings add a Hard Mode with no hint button and a HAGL and Chill Mode with no move counter. You can share your result, and an optional account keeps your streaks and stats across PZLR's games, which also include SHFL, DABL, TRNT, SHIM and CRUM.

It suits players of codewords and cryptograms who like a theme to lean on, and people who know a bit about the day's subject.

How to play HAGL (PZLR)

  1. Read the day's category at the bottom of the board and press Begin.
  2. Look at the thirteen encoded items, where each number stands for one letter.
  3. Select a letter and match it to a number by clicking, tapping, dragging or typing; it fills in across the whole list.
  4. Use the Hint button to reveal a letter if you are stuck.
  5. Decode all thirteen items, then share your result.

Tips

  • Start with short words: a two or three letter word such as THE or AND gives away several numbers at once.
  • Look for doubled numbers and repeated patterns, which point to double letters.
  • Think about the category: the names you expect to see often confirm a guess.
  • Play in Hard Mode once you are confident, since it removes the hint button.
