Cyphr is a daily code-breaking word game. Seven words are stacked in a pyramid, each letter replaced by a number, and the same code runs through the whole pyramid. You guess one letter at a time, with up to 26 wrong guesses, and every letter you crack fills in wherever its number appears.

About Cyphr

Cyphr is a word puzzle built on a simple substitution code. Each day the game picks seven words and stacks them in a pyramid, starting with one tile at the top. Every letter is shown as a number, and the same number always stands for the same letter across the whole pyramid, so cracking a letter in one word helps you everywhere else.

You work from the top down. Guess the letter for a tile; if you are right it turns green and keeps its number in the corner as a reminder. A word must be finished before the next row unlocks, but inside a word you can solve the letters in any order. The words are picked at random and do not form a sentence, so there is no phrase to lean on, only the shapes of words and the letters you have already found. You can make up to 26 wrong guesses in all. Hard mode removes the number reminders as you go, so you have to remember the code yourself.

The pyramid, the words and the number code all change at midnight, and everyone plays the same puzzle that day. There is a practice round for learning the rules, statistics, a shareable score and a setting to turn off the bright animations. It suits players who enjoy cryptograms and codewords and want a short one each day.

How to play Cyphr

  1. Start at the top of the pyramid and guess the letter for the first numbered tile.
  2. When a guess is right, the tile turns green and keeps its number as a reminder.
  3. Use the letters you have found: the same number means the same letter everywhere in the pyramid.
  4. Finish each word to unlock the next row; within a word, solve the letters in any order.
  5. Complete all seven words before you run out of 26 wrong guesses, then share your score.

Tips

  • Short words near the top give away common letters cheaply, so get them right first.
  • Look for repeated numbers inside one word: they point to double letters or patterns such as -ss or -ee.
  • Use the practice round to get used to the code before your daily attempt.
  • Try hard mode only once you are comfortable keeping the code in your head.
