BrainBashers Fillomino for 3 October, 12x12: a grid with scattered given numbers and a number picker column on the left

Fillomino on BrainBashers asks you to divide a grid into groups of joined squares. Every square gets a number equal to the size of its group, a few numbers are given, and two groups of the same size may never touch side by side.

About Fillomino (BrainBashers)

Fillomino is a region-dividing puzzle. When it is solved, the grid is split into groups of squares joined horizontally and vertically, and every square holds the number of squares in its group: a lone 1, pairs of 2s, three 3s together and so on. Some numbers are given at the start, and you fill in the rest. A given clue does not have to be the only one in its group; the site notes that two or more numbers can sit in the same group. Two separate groups of the same size cannot share a side, or they would merge into one larger group.

BrainBashers, Kevin Stone's puzzle site, posts an 8x8 and a 12x12 at Easy and a 16x16 at Medium every day, with a 20x20 weekly special. On the play page you pick a number from a column beside the grid and place it, and there are check, answer, print and restart buttons, an option to show mistakes and an optional clock. A help page has a walkthrough.

The puzzles change at midnight GMT or at the time zone you choose, and the date list keeps a few weeks of earlier days. No adverts, no account.

It suits players who enjoy puzzles about shapes and areas more than about digits, even though it is written with numbers.

How to play Fillomino (BrainBashers)

  1. Open the Daily Fillomino page and pick one of today's sizes.
  2. Choose a number from the column beside the grid and place it in a square.
  3. Grow each group until it holds as many squares as the number written in it.
  4. Never let two different groups of the same size touch along a side.
  5. Fill every square, then check or reveal the answer; new grids appear after midnight GMT.

Tips

  • A 1 is a whole group on its own, so its neighbours can never be 1.
  • Two different numbers side by side mark a border between groups.
  • A clue with only one way out must grow in that direction.
  • Empty pockets surrounded by finished groups often have only one size that fits.

Questions

Can a group contain more than one given number?

Yes. Two or more given numbers can belong to the same group, as long as they are equal.

Can two groups of the same size touch?

Not along a side, because they would then form one bigger group. Corners may touch.

What sizes are there?

8x8 and 12x12 at Easy and 16x16 at Medium every day, plus a 20x20 weekly special.

Is it free?

Yes, with no adverts and no account.
